Paint, dents & bodywork
Paintless Dent Repair vs. Traditional Dent Repair
Paintless dent repair and traditional body repair solve different kinds of damage. PDR reshapes suitable dents while retaining the existing finish. Traditional repair can address damage that also requires surface preparation and new paint, and may include replacing a panel when repair is unsuitable.
The best choice follows the condition of the vehicle. It should not be selected simply because one method sounds cheaper or more advanced.
What PDR is suited to
PDR may be considered where the coating is suitable, the dent can be reshaped and appropriate access is available. Preserving the existing finish can avoid refinishing that panel, but suitability depends on more than dent size.
Paint damage, sharp distortion, panel edges, reinforcement and previous repairs can limit the option. The technician should explain both the expected result and the risk of discovering conditions that change the plan. Our guide to door dent and collision damage repair covers those checks.
What traditional repair can address
Conventional repair can involve restoring panel shape, preparing the surface and refinishing it with an appropriate paint system. It may be necessary when paint is cracked or missing, or when the distortion is not suitable for PDR.
Replacement is a separate possibility where the panel cannot appropriately be repaired. Manufacturer restrictions and the role of the component matter. A visibly dented outer panel should not be treated as an isolated cosmetic issue when the collision also affected attachments or underlying structure.
Compare the complete scope
A PDR quote might include removing interior trim for access. A conventional quote might include colour matching and blending into adjacent panels. These are different operations, so a price comparison needs to account for what each option actually delivers.
Ask whether corrosion protection, trim clips and related operations are included. Confirm how previous paintwork affects the recommendation. If the estimate is based only on photos, find out what remains provisional until the vehicle is inspected.
Timing is vehicle-specific
A suitable PDR repair can avoid paint-process steps, but that does not create a guaranteed same-day turnaround. Access, damage complexity, technician availability and other work on the car still affect the schedule.
Traditional repair requires the applicable preparation, refinishing and finishing stages. An insurer's review or parts order may also be involved. Ask for the next confirmed milestone, rather than choosing a method around an unsupported completion promise.
Can a dent be repaired without repainting?
Sometimes. That is the core idea behind paintless dent repair, but suitability depends on more than dent size. The existing coating needs to be intact and suitable, the panel must be able to be reshaped, and safe access has to be available.
Sharp creases, stretched metal, cracked paint, difficult panel edges, reinforcement, corrosion or previous body repairs can change the recommendation. Photos can help with initial triage, but an in-person assessment may still be needed before committing to PDR.
Access behind the panel should follow an appropriate repair method. Preserving visible paint does not remove the need to protect concealed surfaces and corrosion protection where work affects them.
Agree on the result before authorizing
Ask whether the proposal is for full restoration or a budget-limited improvement. A reduced-cost improvement may be a reasonable personal choice for some cosmetic damage, but it should not be confused with complete collision repair.
Keep the written scope and review the repaired area at pickup. If the shop recommends changing methods, request the reason, revised cost and any timeline effect before authorizing additional work. Clear expectations make the choice easier to evaluate later.
