Should You Call Insurance Before Visiting a Body Shop?

ZhoopZhoop Driver Guides · 3 min read · Updated September 27, 2026

You can ask a body shop for an assessment before a claim is fully organized, but you should not delay required insurer notification while collecting estimates. The best order depends on safety, the vehicle's location and what you need to authorize next.

If the vehicle is unsafe or stranded

Deal with immediate safety and recovery first. Follow police instructions where applicable. Before arranging a tow to a shop, confirm that the facility can receive the vehicle and has the information it needs. Tell the operator and shop about wheel damage, leaks, airbag deployment or EV concerns.

Contact the insurer promptly to ask about recovery, storage and assessment arrangements. If an expense cannot wait, keep the records and explain the circumstances, but do not assume every charge will be reimbursed.

If the vehicle can wait for an appointment

Call the shop with the year, make, model and a description of the impact. Ask whether photographs are useful and whether the appointment is a visual estimate or a more involved assessment. You can gather information while the insurer opens the claim.

Make clear whether you want only an estimate or are authorizing repair work. Those are not the same instruction. Ask about inspection or disassembly charges before agreeing to them, particularly if you have not decided whether to make a claim.

What the insurer can clarify first

The insurer can explain claim-reporting requirements, applicable coverage, the deductible and what information it wants from the repairer. It can also tell you how rental or towing requests are handled. Getting those answers early helps you avoid making plans based on assumed coverage.

A claim number is useful for communication, but it does not automatically mean every cost is approved. Ask what is confirmed and what remains to be assessed.

What the shop can clarify first

The shop can discuss visible damage, assessment steps, supported services and appointment availability. It may explain why an image-based number would be preliminary. It cannot determine your policy coverage or promise that an insurer will accept every proposed operation.

If a repair plan includes work you do not understand, ask for a plain-language explanation. Share that explanation with the adjuster if coverage is unresolved. Keeping repair reasoning and insurance decisions separate makes the conversation more productive.

A practical call sequence

Start with emergency assistance when needed. Then establish reporting and safe vehicle recovery. Notify the insurer and ask how assessment should proceed. Contact your chosen shop, confirm the appointment and send the requested information. Before authorizing repairs, make sure the scope and your possible payment responsibility are clear.

The order of two phone calls matters less than avoiding an unapproved commitment. Do not sign an open-ended authorization simply because you expect to make a claim later.

What to have ready

Keep the collision date, vehicle details, photographs, reporting reference, vehicle location and insurer contact together. Add your availability and preferred update method. A short, organized explanation is easier for both parties to act on than a long chain of forwarded messages.
