Choosing a shop & aftercare
Why Communication Matters During Collision Repair
Good collision-repair communication tells you what has been confirmed, what is still uncertain and what happens next. “Your car is in progress” is less useful than an update explaining that inspection is complete and one part is awaiting a confirmed delivery date.
You do not need constant messages. You need a reliable contact and meaningful updates at decisions that affect cost, timing or transport.
Agree on a contact method
At drop-off, confirm the phone number or email the shop should use, your preferred method and who can authorize work. If someone else is helping manage the repair, establish their role clearly.
Ask when the next update is expected, even if there is no change. That avoids repeated calls driven by uncertainty. Tell the shop about genuine deadlines, while recognizing that a personal deadline cannot remove a technical or supply constraint.
Use milestones to understand progress
Useful milestones include completed disassembly, insurer review, parts arrival, bodywork, refinishing and final verification. Not every vehicle follows an identical sequence, but these stages explain why a car may be waiting rather than actively undergoing repair.
Ask which dependency currently controls the schedule. A vehicle awaiting an unavailable part is in a different position from one undergoing final checks. See repair timelines.
Changes should explain their effect
When hidden damage is found, ask what was discovered, what work is proposed and whether your authorization or insurer approval is needed. Request any change in your expected payment in writing.
An update about added work should also address timing and rental implications where known. The shop can explain the repair impact, while the insurer must confirm coverage decisions. Avoid treating an informal shop estimate as a guaranteed rental extension.
Ask for facts when dates move
A revised completion date should be accompanied by the reason and the next step. Is a part on backorder? Has it shipped? Did a required check reveal another condition? Those details help you plan more effectively than repeated optimistic guesses.
A date can remain uncertain for a legitimate reason. What matters is whether the uncertainty is described honestly and revisited when new information arrives. Keep the latest update so everyone is working from the same understanding.
Close the loop before pickup
Ask whether all required work and checks are complete, what payment is due and which documents will be ready. Arrange enough time to review the car and ask questions.
If communication breaks down, summarize the outstanding questions in one message and request a named contact. Keep the tone specific: the missing decision, the needed information and its practical effect. Our authorization questions can help establish that clarity from the beginning.
